I.E.A.P. conducts research projects on its own, or upon commission by
third parties. Most often these concern
clarification of the biological and psychological
needs of various companion animal species and their
proper housing and care, or the human-companion
animal relationship - including its importance in
animal-assisted therapy programmes for specific
groups of people.
Past research results, especially those on house
cat behaviour and cats' relationships with people,
have attracted much interest at international
congresses and been published in reviewed journals
and scientific books.
Dr. Turner, director of the institute, has
supervised the research projects of, and/or
officially advised Masters and doctoral students
from various universities (e.g. University of
Zurich, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
ETH-Zurich, Université de Neuchâtel, University of
Cambridge, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem). He
was principle investigator on the research project
«Dog Visitations to Homes for the Elderly» of the
IEMT. Recently he has been the principle
investigator on projects concerning:
- Mood changes in cat owners and their
influence on interactions between the cat and
the person;
- Mechanisms responsible for the positive
effects that pets have on the quality of life
and health of their owners;
- Reliability of anthropomorphic
interpretations of dog and cat behaviour
- Communication between cats and their owners
